Classification

Sodium-Calcium-Magnesium Bicarbonate spring

A bicarbonate spring led by sodium with strong calcium and magnesium contributions, layered with chloride and sulfate sub-types. Wellhead temperature near 69 °C places it among Japan's hottest natural sources — the water arrives hot without supplemental heating. Neutral pH keeps the feel gentle on the skin, and the bicarbonate dominance puts it squarely in the Japanese beauty-water family.

An excellent old-school onsen with a view of the mountain river. There are 2 baths, one hot and one not so hot. The old man who was there explained that first you should sit in the not-so-hot bath, then sit in the hot bath, go outside and sit in the mizuburo, sit again in the hot bath, and then go back to the mizuburo, and after that stand there drying off in the wind while looking at the river. By feel, the hot one is a little over 42, I think 43-44. The warm one is about 42. The view is really great. The owners also placed well-made artificial dragonflies in different spots on that balcony with the mizuburo. It feels very cozy there. The place itself is also a cafe. The staff was very kind and gave the advice to “go through Kyushu 88 at your own pace” so you can enjoy each place. She was also happy to show the sign with the ingredients :) It is included in Kyushu 88 and Kirishima Yu-Tabi.

360. Hinode Onsen Kinoko no Sato, Kirishima, Kagoshima Onsen for 300 yen. Operating hours listed as 10:00 to 20:00. They stamp the 88 Onsen of Kyushu book. They issue Toreco cards for this onsen. An old man came into the bath later and really wanted to chat — he brought a phone right into the bath for the translator. He was curious where I'm from, how I found out about this onsen, which ones I've visited nearby and which I'm planning. After I answered that I'm collecting the 88 Onsen of Kyushu, his interest only grew. Inside: two baths with clear brown, slightly cloudy water. One bath at temperature around 41.5, the second around 44. Outside on a balcony: a cold bath with an excellent view. Recommended for a visit.
