Uses natural hot spring water
373. Taki no Yu (Onsen), Aira, Kagoshima A 24-hour onsen in the middle of nowhere. No staff — payment of 200 yen into a box. They stamp the 88 Onsen of Kyushu book. The stamp is quite swollen from humidity but still usable. The taxi driver at the station initially didn't want to take me, then started suggesting other onsen. But I insisted. As we drove past other places, he'd say with faint hope that this one is a good onsen with many visitors, but I just repeated the name of this onsen and we kept going. The onsen is next to some mothballed building — apparently a former motel. There are signs saying the owner monitors the area by cameras, but given the general state of the location, it's hard to believe any cameras work here. Breathing inside is excellent. Cloudy white-green water, temperature around 35. A unique and atmospheric place — definitely worth visiting.
