The kyodoyu (共同湯, communal bath) of Sendaitaki Onsen is a bare-bones, town-operated bath with no staff on site: you drop your fee in the box, or pay by PayPay, and soak. The water runs clear and feels notably smooth on the skin, and it flows fresh without recirculation. It runs hot, noticeably so, and the two gender-separated indoor baths have a tiled, Showa-era look that has changed little over the decades. The district itself was a favourite retreat of Saigo Takamori (西郷隆盛), and the communal bath carries that association. The area was named one of Japan's 100 Famous Hot Springs (日本名湯百選, Nihon Meito Hyakunen) in 1990.
