Tanoyu (田之湯) sits in a quiet residential neighborhood and has the feel of a local sento: indoor baths only, sulfur water, and an entrance sign that cheekily declares the place the headquarters of the Japan Morning Bath Party (Nihon Asafuro-to Honbu, 日本朝風呂党本部). The name comes from the rice paddies (ta, 田) that once covered the area before the spring was discovered. Cups are left out so you can drink from the spring as well as soak. It is also one stop on the Kyushu 88 hot springs (Kyushu Hachijuhachi-yu, 九州八十八湯) circuit.
