Sodium-Calcium Chloride spring

A hot (67.4 °C) sodium-calcium chloride spring from the Shima Onsen area, with sulfate adding quiet body to the salty chloride core. Neutral pH and 1,830 mg/kg of dissolved solids give long-lasting, heat-retaining warmth. Metasilicic acid at 126 mg/kg leaves a thin silica film that smooths the skin afterwards.

About

The main building here was constructed in 1694 and is designated an Important Cultural Property, making it the oldest surviving hot spring inn building in Japan. Miyazaki Hayao visited multiple times, and the place is widely cited as one of the inspirations for the bathhouse in Spirited Away. The water is a sodium-calcium chloride-sulfate spring flowing at 62.9°C from the source. The iwaburo (岩風呂, rock bath) serves as the mixed bath, though this has been suspended at times. The wooden corridors, red bridges, and riverside setting have a weight to them that photographs can't quite catch.

Sekizenkan, that famous ryokan supposedly from Miyazaki's Spirited Away (or maybe not). A beautiful ryokan by a beautiful river — worth seeing at least from the outside. They have many baths, but for higaeri they only let you into Genroku no Yu, a bath in European style from the Taisho era. A very unexpected gap. Very atmospheric, clear water, from 42 to 46 degrees in different tubs. Sulfate-rich, packed with minerals — very pleasantly relaxing. Recommended.
