Kuronagi Onsen Ryokan sits at the end of a 20-minute mountain hike from Kuronagi Station on the Kurobe Gorge Railway, with no road access at all. The main draw is the large mixed rotenburo (open-air bath) called Izumi (源泉), right alongside the gorge river, plus a women's-only rotenburo called Tennyo-no-yu (天女の湯) closer to the stream. The water feels silky smooth on the skin, a quality the locals describe in Toyama dialect as "tsubetsubе." Gender-separated indoor baths are available too. The building itself dates to the Meiji era, and the spring has a long story: first discovered in 1645, it was kept secret and even forbidden under the Edo-period Kaga domain until officially permitted in 1868. The ryokan is open from May through late November only, with no TV in the rooms and very little noise beyond the river.
