About

Furusato no Yu (ふるさとの湯) sits on the west side of Miyakejima, a remote island that is technically part of Tokyo. The bath has both an indoor pool and an open-air tub outside. The water is salty and brownish from iron, and the outdoor tub runs on the cooler side, easy to linger in. At sunset the open-air bath looks straight out over the Pacific. The facility is small and run by the village, with a rest area and a good number of washing stations.

Miyakejima used to have many onsen, but after two eruptions they all disappeared, and this is the one new one that recently reopened. 500 yen, standard shower with standing showers. Two baths — a large warm outdoor one, feels like 36-37, closed in winter, and an indoor one at 40, a bit smaller. Water is brownish-clear, no smell. Overall pleasant. Outside the ocean view is only visible if you stand up, and there's nowhere to really sit. From inside the ocean is visible through the glass. Of all the onsen on the island, I recommend this one, because it's the only one.
