About

Ashino Onsen sits on a low hill along the old Oshu road in Nasu, and it has the feel of a working cure-house rather than a resort. The water from its two private sources flows through the baths without recirculation, and it leaves the skin noticeably smooth. The standout is the Yakuso-no-yu (薬草の湯, medicinal herb baths), which come in two versions: Nagi-no-yu (那岐の湯), the stronger tub that can feel intense after just a few minutes, and Nami-no-yu (那美の湯), the gentler one for a longer soak. There is also an outdoor Mera-no-yu (メラの湯), a cold bath, a foot bath, and a herb mist sauna where the spray comes down from the ceiling. The large rest area fills with people eating and lying down between soaks, and longtime visitors have nicknamed the place the "cane-forgetting spring" for how the baths tend to ease stiff joints.
