Miharayama Onsen Well No. 5

Sampled at wellhead
Simple
Classification

Calcium-Sodium Bicarbonate spring

A simple thermal spring drawn from Miharayama Onsen's No. 5 well at a remarkable 84 °C — one of the hotter natural sources on Izu Oshima, cooled before bathing. Neutral pH, hypotonic, and lightly mineralized (0.85 g/kg dissolved solids), so the water reads as quietly gentle on the skin rather than mineral-heavy. What sets it apart is a generous 333.8 mg/kg of metasilicic acid: enough to leave the thin silica film that gives the classic Japanese "beauty-water" feel, smoothing the skin after a soak. Colourless and clear at the wellhead, with no odour and a faint bitter note on the tongue.

About

The bath wing of Oshima Onsen Hotel on Izu Oshima, a volcanic island two hours from Tokyo by ferry. Both the indoor panoramic hall and the outdoor bath have separate men's and women's sections. The outdoor bath looks out through a stretch of old-growth forest to the unobstructed silhouette of Mt. Mihara (三原山). The spring water is clear and colorless, fed fresh without recirculation (kakenagashi, 源泉かけ流し). Day-use bathing is available to non-guests.

Mihara-yama Onsen Onsen and hotel on the way to the volcano in Oshima, 800 yen. Water 40 degrees, brownish but clear, no smell. The view from the outdoor bath is amazing — you can cool off in the wind and there are places to sit. Indoor bath same temperature. Reachable by public transport only on weekends and holidays — I walked, of course. They serve local milk in a proper carton (but not glass bottles). Like, overall a good onsen with a view.
