Classification

Calcium-Sodium Bicarbonate-Chloride spring

A sodium-led bicarbonate spring with a salt-tinged finish from a chloride sub-type — the classic jūsō-sen (soda-water) style, soft on the skin. Weakly alkaline and gentle on the skin, it sits in the Japanese beauty-water family. A generous 250 mg/kg of metasilicic acid leaves the kind of silica film that makes skin feel noticeably smoother afterwards.

About

A hot spring inherited since the Meiji era, known as the 'child treasure bath.' Located close to the downtown area, it is marked by the tropical plant 'bashō' (similar to a banana tree). Records show renovations were done in 1899 (Meiji 32), but it became 'Kotobuki Onsen' in the Taisho era. Until then, it was said to be effective for women's diseases and had only a women's bath. Even now, the women's bath is overwhelmingly larger, with a bathtub twice the size and a changing room about three times the area of the men's bath. Unusually for a public bath, there is a lobby-like space inside the building, filled with retro items such as an old mirror and a scale. Bath tickets are purchased from a capsule machine for 500 yen for two tickets. It can be more economical to buy tickets when using with multiple people. The bathtub is located about three steps down from the changing room, with a high ceiling and excellent openness. The beautiful mint green walls and retro arched windows delight visitors, making for an enjoyable bathing experience. Fans come from afar, saying 'after bathing, you sleep soundly and do not catch a chill.' It is open until late at night.

143. Kotobuki Onsen, Beppu A grandpa-style onsen for ¥300. Official hours are 13:00 to 00:00. They stamp the Beppu Onsendō rally book. No staff, no shower. The second and third visits weren’t as smooth as the first: - In December 2025, the humidity inside was extreme, moisture was even running down the locker walls in the changing room, it was stuffy and there was a bad smell. - In April 2026, there was no humidity problem, the air inside was fine, but a nail was sticking out of the wooden step in the bath. The water is clear, temperature is 44-45°C. 02.05.2024 27.12.2025 03.04.2026
