Classification

Sodium-Magnesium Bicarbonate-Chloride spring

A hot 49.4 °C bicarbonate-chloride spring led by sodium and magnesium. Neutral pH gives a soft, gentle feel; the water is faintly yellow and clear at the source but throws a reddish-brown sediment as it oxidizes, betraying a touch of iron. A generous 201.8 mg/kg of metasilicic acid layers in the smoothing "beauty-water" film for which bicarbonate springs are loved.

This onsen, Nikorikawa, really impressed me today. No staff, you buy a ticket from a machine. Only local old men among the visitors. The spring was discovered in 1807. The water is something else - reportedly rare in composition with high magnesium content. All surfaces are covered in a thick layer of rust-orange deposits, the water is greenish, slightly iron-tasting (an old man said you can drink it). The rotenburo is the least hot, but everything's above 40. Meanwhile it was 33 outside in the shade. Basically, if I lived in Hokkaido, I'd come here every week.
