Kunoshima Onsen
Radon
+ Simple
Classification

Sodium-Calcium Bicarbonate-Chloride spring

Kunoshima Onsen on Ookunoshima island — classified as a weakly radioactive simple cold-mineral spring (hypotonic, neutral, cold-mineral). The wellhead emerges at just 19.5 °C, so the water is reheated for bathing rather than served at source temperature. Mineralization is light at 130 mg/kg of dissolved solids, which keeps the feel gentle and unobtrusive on the skin. The classification places it in the radon-spring family, the tradition associated with the so-called hormesis claim, and the certificate flags type-specific indications for gout, rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis.

The only hotel on Rabbit Island (there is also a camping site at the hotel). The onsen has radon water, feels like about 41-42 degrees Celsius, divided into a large and a small bath (the photo shows the small one; the large one looks exactly the same, just bigger and with a view of the forest). The hotel itself is old, but they try their best to make the stay pleasant – excellent buffet breakfast and dinner with sashimi, steaks, etc., very courteous staff, and free island tours (only in Japanese, but very interesting). In summer, the beach and outdoor pool are open, and of course there is an absolutely captivating view of the bay – very beautiful sea, boats sailing between the islands, and you can watch the rabbits from above. The island itself has a very dark history related to various wars Japan participated in, many abandoned sites, an active chemical weapons museum, but the rabbits certainly soften this atmosphere with their cuteness.
