Classification

Hydrogen Sulfate spring

A strongly acidic spring (pH 2.3) drawn from a naturally welling source in the Myoban district of Beppu. The water is slightly turbid with a faint astringent edge and a strong rotten-egg note of H₂S, giving the sharp, prickly character typical of acidic water that has a long track record on stubborn skin conditions. It also carries a generous 160.8 mg/kg of metasilicic acid, leaving the kind of thin silica film that makes skin feel smoother afterwards.

About

A large open-air bath with a superb view located on the highest hill in Beppu. From the large open-air rock bath on the hill, you can see Myoban Bridge, Tsurumi Mountain, and Takasaki Mountain. The milky white water overflowing abundantly has various effects such as health promotion and beautifying the skin. Please enjoy the excellent spring water along with the superb view. (Separate baths for men and women; each has an indoor bath.)

This public bath is part of a complex on a hill. They stamp your pass. As I understand it, the main attraction of the complex is private baths in wooden triangular huts (old-fashioned style). The path to the public area doesn't go through these huts but runs separately, slightly to the right of all the hut activity. In the public area there are two baths - indoor and outdoor. The outdoor one looks nice, comes with a decent mountain view. The indoor one is a simple rectangular bath. No showers, just faucets and basins. Water is milky, slight smell, normal water temperature. Overall solid, but you could skip it in favor of other options in Beppu, unless you're getting the private huts.
