Classification

Sodium Chloride spring

A cold-mineral spring drawn at 24 °C from Awara Onsen's Well No. 40. The chemistry is sodium-chloride leaning but lightly mineralized at just 831 mg/kg, so it falls short of the curative-spring threshold and carries no formal spring-quality name; it qualifies as an onsen under Article 2 of the Hot Spring Law by virtue of its fluoride content. Weakly alkaline at pH 8.4 with a very faint hydrogen sulfide whiff at the wellhead, hypotonic, and heated for bathing.

About

Yuraku (ゆ楽) is a 45-room ryokan in Awara Onsen with three separate bath areas. The two large indoor baths run gender-separated throughout the day. The garden open-air bath, Konin-no-yu (光仁の湯), switches between men and women on a set schedule, so overnight guests can use it in both shifts. There is also a private reserved rotenburo, Saisai (彩々), bookable by the hour for overnight guests only. Free ganbanyoku (岩盤浴, a heated stone-bed session) is available in-house. The lobby looks out onto a Japanese garden, and the building has a restaurant, karaoke, and a game corner.

Ryokan. I was staying at Koubou Gurabaatei, but their bath cracked due to the earthquake. The owner seems to be the same for both (they're even decorated in the same style with the same level of service), so they drove us in a van to Yuraku to bathe (about 5 min drive). Gurabaatei served quite tasty food. A fun touch in both ryokans - a zone with a SNES and a set of cartridges. Was in the baths with a gender swap. In the first one (presumably M) the sauna also contained a hot bath. Otherwise the M/F zones were similar, the first slightly larger. Also really cool stone formations in the baths themselves - easy on the eyes and you can sit behind the stones. Water is clear, I don't really remember the smell, normal temperature. The composition chart was the same for M/F, so just one photo. Overall it was good, and I appreciated that they handled the cracked bath situation well.
