Simple
Classification

Calcium-Magnesium-Sodium Bicarbonate-Sulfate spring

A naturally flowing source feeding the Yamaguchi Ryokan motoyu at Tarutama Onsen in the southern Aso highlands. Classed as a simple thermal spring, weakly acidic and hypotonic with dissolved solids of 717 mg/kg, it nonetheless emerges hot at 45.3 °C. A standout 303 mg/kg of metasilicic acid puts it squarely in Japan's beauty-water family, leaving a fine silica film that makes skin feel noticeably smoother. The water comes up faintly yellow-brown and clear, carrying the distinct rotten-egg note of H2S and a light metallic edge — a simple spring with real character.

About

The water here rises from the basin of Kinryu no Taki (the Golden Dragon Waterfall) partway up Mount Eboshi in South Aso, and you can hear the falls from the baths. It's a neutral simple spring, gentle on skin, flowing straight from the source at around 41°C. There are private rental baths with valley and waterfall views, as well as a large communal indoor bath. After the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake forced a five-year closure, the place reopened in 2021 under the name Takibiyori with a thoughtful, design-conscious feel that fits the surroundings rather than fighting them.

432. Tarutama Onsen - TAKIBIYORI, Aso, Kumamoto Onsen for 1000 yen in Aso, there's a waterfall nearby. Private bath available for 2500-3000 (didn't try). Operating hours listed as 10:00 to 19:00 (closed Wed). They stamp the Kyushu 88 Onsen book. Bath photos from the internet are partially accurate — they don't fully convey the atmosphere of the outdoor zone, plus I visited in winter so the foliage was different. In the outdoor zone there are three small stone baths. There's a general view of rocks and forest from the zone, but it doesn't work from inside the baths themselves — a small fence gets in the way. Water is clear brown. Temperature 40. Indoor bath with cloudy white-green water, temperature 40. View through the window of forest on the mountain. It was cozy in the bath. The air inside is comfortable. Seems like the place has potential to be even better, but it's still a pleasant spot.
