About

The baths draw from nine springs on the property, running continuously, and the water is clear and mild with no strong odor. The indoor bath has a large window for snowfall-watching in winter; the rotenburo is a stone tub enclosed in camellia bushes of several varieties. There is also a sauna lined with Aomori hiba (ヒバ) cypress, a cold plunge, and a private bath available by reservation. The inn has operated for over four centuries and holds a particular connection to Munakata Shiko (棟方志功), the Aomori woodblock artist who spent summers here and left paintings now displayed in the on-site gallery. It was also the first onsen in Aomori Prefecture to receive a permit to serve the spring water as a drinking cure.
