About

Naoshima Public Bath I Love Yu (直島銭湯「I♥湯」, Naoshima Sento "Ai Rabu Yu") is an actual working sento on Naoshima island, but every surface of it, from the exterior facade to the bath pool tiles, murals, mosaics, and even the toilet ceramics, was designed by artist Shinro Ohtake (大竹伸朗). It opened in 2009 as part of Benesse Art Site Naoshima and is operated by the local tourism NPO. You genuinely soak in hot water, just surrounded by Ohtake's layered, collage-like world. The counter at the entrance sells original goods designed by Ohtake. Tattoos are welcome.

While I'm trying to recover from an 11-hour drive from Imabari, all I want to say is: To be avoided at all costs. Kitsch is not always contemporary art, and crowds of Chinese tourists are always crowds. Every remote ryokan has a sign with behavior rules for tourists, yet here on this tourist island it's a free-for-all — do whatever you want.
