96. Shinoyu Onsen, Beppu An iconic grandpa onsen. Entry costs 200. They stamp both the Beppu onsen passport and the 88 Onsens of Kyushu booklet. Though the Kyushu stamp gets pressed down brutally hard and all the text smears — not sure how they'll accept it for certification, probably on good faith. The onsen itself is very well balanced between old-school rawness and some degree of civility. High ceilings, the bath feels very cozy and comfortable. Especially when sunbeams penetrate through the upper windows and reflect in the water. Easy to breathe. One oval bath divided into two zones. One is hot by temperature, the other is just a little milder. If you sit by the source inside the bath, there's a very gentle micro-jet effect. Clear water, slightly cloudy. Faint sulfur smell. The water has a slightly "enveloping" effect. Recommended for old-school fans and those who want a taste of old-school without the extreme harshness.
