Motoyu Yuzankaku (元湯 雄山閣) is a traditional ryokan on the Oga Peninsula, a member of the Nihon Hito wo Mamoru Kai (日本秘湯を守る会), the association that preserves Japan's lesser-known hot springs. The water comes straight from the inn's own source with nothing added, and because it is faintly salty it tends to keep you warm long after you get out. The color shifts with the seasons, cycling through rust-brown, greenish, and milky white, and mineral deposits build up visibly on the pipes and bath floor. In the indoor bath, the hot spring water is spouted from namahage (なまはげ) demon-ogre figures, the folkloric symbol of the Oga region. Separate indoor and open-air baths are available for men and women, reached by about thirty steps down from the main floor.
