About

Yakushi no Yu (薬師の湯) is the men's bathhouse at Osorezan (恐山), a Zen Buddhist temple in Aomori known across Japan as one of the realms of the dead. The building is plain wood with two tubs and nothing else: no soap, no shampoo, no shower, bring your own towel. The water is a pale green with a strong sulfur smell and runs very hot. It sits alongside three other bathhouses in the complex (women's, alternating, and one mixed bath). Entry is covered by the temple's mountain admission ticket, and the baths are only open from May through October.
