About

The indoor bath at Nakasaki-sanso Okuhida no Yu (中崎山荘 奥飛騨の湯) is thick with drifting sulfur flakes, the water clear and distinctly eggy. The rotenburo next to it is cooled the old way: spring water trickles down hanging rice-straw racks (hasa-kake, はさ掛け) before reaching the tub, which also screens the bath from the opposite bank. Through the gaps you can catch views of Kasagadake (笠ヶ岳) and hear the Hotaka River below. Inside the bathhouse there is a tap of cold mountain spring water, good for drinking. The facility was formerly a ryokan called Nakasaki-sanso that moved to its current site; it now operates as a day-use bath and dining room only. Photography in the baths is explicitly permitted, which is rare.
