About

Hebi no Yu is a wild outdoor onsen reached by a proper hike through forested hills, four pools of clear, colorless water in the open air, each a bit cooler than the last. It's free, clothing-optional in practice, and genuinely remote. The trail rewards you with views and, apparently, the occasional wild boar.

462. Hebinoyu, Beppu ★★★ A wild onsen; very inconvenient to reach without a car. There are signs about crime near the approach. Popular among locals, tourists can also be found, but in fact, no one disturbs anyone. There is a roof and a women's changing room. 1. Lower area with a two-level bath. 1.1. The lower level offers the best, most natural wild view. The water is clear, with a small amount of mud fragments. Temperature is 39°C. 1.2. Upper level, water is clear, with more mud than the lower level. Temperature is 40°C. 2. Upper zone. 2.1. Main bath with sand at the bottom, water is clear, temperature 40°C. Very few mud fragments. The bath photo from the internet matches. 2.2. Bath for lying down, temperature 42°C. Minimal mud fragments. Super cool wild onsen, inconvenient to get to, the road is relatively rough (driving at night or in fog can be dangerous). 01.04.2025
