Geto Onsen (夏油温泉, Geto Onsen) sits at the end of a long mountain road in Iwate, open roughly May through November. The inn runs as a toji-yado (湯治宿), a curative soaking inn, with three bathing areas: a hinoki (cypress) indoor bath that has two tubs fed by separate springs, an open-air bath in the beech forest, and another beside the mountain stream. A private kashikiri (貸切) bath called Shintaro-no-yu (新太郎の湯) can be reserved separately. The water comes out nearly clear and has a faint smoothness that leaves skin feeling soft. Old hot spring rankings once put Geto in the top rank of eastern Japan, and the springs have reportedly flowed for over 850 years.
