The steam bath continuing since the Kamakura period is a traditional Japanese bathing style! Kannawa Mushiyu, said to have been founded by Ippen Shonin in 1276 (Kenji 2), is located in Kannawa Onsen, which still retains the atmosphere of a hot spring healing area in Beppu City. The characteristic "steam bath" of Beppu Onsen is completely different from the recent sauna boom. The stone room about 8 tatami mats in size, heated by real hot spring steam, is covered with medicinal herbs called Sekisho, which grow only along clear streams, and you lie on top of them. (The floor underneath is also warmed by hot spring steam.) When lying in the stone room, you gradually warm from the heart of your body with the refreshing scent of Sekisho, and beads of sweat appear on your face. (The steam bath usage time is about 8 minutes, with a call once and an additional 2 minutes.) It is said to be effective for cold sensitivity and beautiful skin, and is very popular with female customers. After leaving the steam bath, you can of course thoroughly wash off sweat in the indoor bath (chloride spring). If you are tired in the city or your body condition is not so good, why not do hot spring therapy at this Kannawa Mushiyu? There is also a free "foot steam" at the facility entrance, so please use it to heal tired feet from walking around Kannawa Onsen!
