Hizenya (ひぜんや) has been on the Tsuetate River since 1690, now in its 17th generation. The main building straddles the Kumamoto-Oita prefectural border, with a corridor called Ryokokubashi (両国橋) marking the line. There are four distinct bath complexes to move between: Kissho-no-Yu (吉祥の湯), a short drive from the main inn, is the largest, with five varieties of outdoor bath including rock, wood, barrel, and lava pools. Bungo-no-Yu (豊後の湯) sits in an adjacent forest terrace and includes an anti-aging sauna. Higo-no-Yu (肥後の湯), for hotel guests only, has a riverside rotenburo and a stained-glass indoor hall. The Daishizen (大自然) annex adds Japanese and Western-style baths side by side. All draw from 11 springs on the property, and the water is clear and smooth on the skin. Private family baths and top-floor rooms with in-room rotenburo are also available.
