Kakunodate Onsen
Chloride

Classification

Calcium-Sodium Chloride-Sulfate spring

A calcium-led sodium chloride spring with sulfate adding a quiet, settled body — the certificate prints it as a Ca·Na−Cl·SO₄ blend. The wellhead is hot (49.2 °C) and cooled to a comfortable 42 °C at the bath, while pH 8.7 puts it firmly in the alkaline range with the slippery 'beauty-water' feel that locals associate with smoother skin. Dissolved solids land at 5,423 mg/kg — moderately mineralized, enough to leave a faint salty tang on the lips and a thin mineral film as you towel off. The bath is served straight from the source: no dilution, no reheating, no recirculation, only a chlorine-based disinfection step kept in for hygiene.

About

A straightforward day-use bath in the middle of Kakunodate town. The indoor bath has faintly salty water and runs on the warm side, with a sauna and cold plunge in the same changing room. No outdoor bath. It has the feel of a local neighborhood bathhouse more than a resort onsen, and regulars treat it that way.

213. Kakunodate Hot Spring A well-worn old onsen in Kakunodate. The shoe lockers at the entrance are pretty rusty. Entry, a small towel, and a large towel rental - 1200. From the changing room there's an entrance to the sauna. Inside, a large rectangular bath with a big rock in it. Breathing is good, but there's a rotten water smell in the washing area (not from the onsen, but from the plumbing/sewer). The onsen water is clear, with some faint smell, but it doesn't seem to be chlorine. Water temperature is about 42. Overpriced for this kind of onsen, of course, but you can mix it with the Showa vibes and support the place, especially considering that Kakunodate doesn't have many onsens to begin with.
