Kin-no-yu, the posted source at Tae-no-yu, is a calcium-magnesium sulfate spring of the gansho (mirabilite-bearing) sub-family — one of Japan's hottest sources at 85.6 degrees C at the wellhead, cooled to 42 degrees C before reaching the bath. Weakly alkaline at pH 7.9, the sulfate body sits quietly on the skin while the Ca-Mg load adds weight and a layer of sodium-sulfate mirabilite gives the water its settled, full feel.

This happened completely unplanned. I was planning to go to Ganiba (the next stop after Taenoyu), but I had a bout of social anxiety - a huge group of Chinese tourists hinted that maybe I didn't want to walk naked 50 meters through the forest and sit in the onsen shoulder to shoulder with that crowd. In the end, Taenoyu turned out to be a super cute place (later I read that it's especially popular with women) - a small ryokan, everything wooden, day-use from 10:30 to 15:00 for 1,000 yen.
