下呂温泉(送湯ポンプ所)

Gero Onsen (distribution pump station)
Simple
Classification

Sodium spring

An alkaline simple thermal spring (pH 9.1) distributed from Gero Onsen's central pump station. Its alkalinity goes beyond merely weak, giving the slippery, smoothing feel of Japan's beauty-water family. The water is only lightly mineralized at 370 mg/kg, so it bathes gently, while 65.9 mg/kg of metasilicic acid leaves a thin silica film that makes skin feel noticeably smoother.

About

Kisoya is a ryokan in Gero Onsen built in 1988, and its most unusual feature is the tatami-floored indoor bath: the washing area and bath surround are laid with tatami mats, making the floor warm underfoot and easier to sit on than tile. Both the indoor and open-air baths are gender-separated. The open-air bath sits on an upper floor with an open view of the sky. Gero's water is well known for leaving skin smooth, and the milky-soft feel comes through clearly here. Day-use bathing is available in the evenings. The inn takes families seriously: the baths have baby baths and a baby bed.

55. Kisoya, Gero Onsen Went with a tegata for higaeri (listed from 15 to 17, and except Saturdays from 18 to 20). The indoor bath room has a soft floor. There's a plaque with a bird on the wall. The outdoor bath is small, the view from it is pretty nominal (but you can see Hotel Sasara from the previous review). Water temperature slightly below hot, with a sour-chlorine smell, and fine white limescale particles in the indoor bath. Decent enough, but compared to other onsens in Gero, you can skip it.
