An alkaline simple thermal spring from Gero, showing a high pH of 9.4. Sodium-led with small amounts of bicarbonate, carbonate and sulfate, it sits squarely in the Japanese beauty-water family, leaving the skin smooth and slippery. The source emerges hot at 56 °C, yet the water itself is gentle and low in irritation.

About

This resort hotel stands on a hillside above the town, with an indoor bath and a rotenburo that looks out over Gero's rooftops toward the surrounding hills and forest, plus a small sauna room that only fits a handful of people at a time. Bathers often mention how smooth the water leaves their skin. It's a big buffet-dining hotel, popular with families and groups, so the outdoor bath faces the town rather than deep nature.

58. Yukai Resort Gero Saichoraku Honkan, Gero Onsen Went with a tegata for higaeri (listed from 14 to 21). Indoor bath is hot, clear, water has a slightly sour smell. Through the glass there's an excellent view of the town. Outdoor bath is slightly milder in temperature than the indoor one. Water is clear with a similarly slightly sour smell. Through a balcony that has a lounger, there's a great view of the town at night. But the transition from the balcony to the bath and back is quite slippery, so you need to be very careful. Also, since the view goes through the balcony which is higher than the bath, from the bath itself the view isn't that great — for the view you need to get up on the balcony. Great place, generally recommended for evening visits since the town looks especially nice with the illuminated signs. But due to the balcony issue, for a similar view this hotel loses to the baths at the neighboring Hotel Armeria. So either go to both, or for the view go to Armeria. The crowd levels were about the same at both places at the same time. I attached a rough photo of the town view for a general idea — I took it from the street; in person and from above in the bath, the view is of course much better.
