667. Nanki-Shirahama Nagomi-no-Yu Kachofugetsu, Shirahama, Wakayama Stayed overnight. Ordered food for one - kaiseki, it was delicious. Western-style room with a small balcony overlooking the town. No issues with insects getting into the room with windows closed. They sell the Wakayama 12 Onsen stamp book. Due to translation difficulties, the staff awkwardly ordered me a car - not to drive through several spots, but just a simple car booking. I had to negotiate with the driver myself. First time trying this type of establishment. A kind of hipster guesthouse-post-ryokan. The place looks like a mix of a good modern guesthouse with rooms and a partial ryokan format. The result: - price with meals is similar to a ryokan in Shirahama; - Western-style rooms with a city/ocean view; - emphasis on having onsen (private in-room baths here, no public ones); - yukata provided with a laid-back option to wear them; - no ryokan awkwardness, chill atmosphere (like a guesthouse); - ryokan-format kaiseki with proper service; - lots of young guests; - Japanese staff, mostly no English; - lounge area in the lobby with drinks, ice cream, noodles, snacks, and a microwave. In-room bath with clear water, temperature around 39. The wooden bath is in generally good condition, but there are a few small spots with traces of mold. Breathing inside is fine, there are windows you can open for ventilation, but be careful in the evening - in Shirahama lots of insects can fly in toward the light. Either this type of establishment isn't my thing, or I haven't gotten used to it on the first try, but it didn't really click.
