A sulfur-bearing sodium chloride-bicarbonate spring carrying a moderate rotten-egg note of H₂S at the source. Neutral and hypotonic, but generously mineralized with 177 mg/kg of metasilicic acid that leaves a thin silica film for noticeably smoother skin. The wellhead runs at 85.8 °C — among Japan's hottest natural sources — and the chemistry layers chloride saltiness with bicarbonate softness.

Visited for higaeri for 1,000 on a bath day (regular price 1,500), and they gave two towels. Higaeri hours stated as 12:00 to 19:00. They stamp the 88 Onsen of Kyushu book. There's a random Japanese dinosaur statue at the observation deck. Bath photos from the internet match reality.
1. Indoor zone. Breathing is fine, slight proper sulfurous onsen smell.
1.1. Large bath with clear water, temperature 41-42.
1.2. Small bath with clear water with fine white mineral deposits, temperature 40.
1.3. Sauna.
1.4. Cold bath.
2. You can take the stairs down to the outdoor bath. There's a view of the forest through the fence. When I visited it started snowing, which looked very pleasant — I've attached a photo of roughly what the forest looks like from the bath (the photo itself was taken from outside the bath).
Bath is partly stone, with clear water, temperature 40.
There's also a "stone bath" area that apparently has actual onsen baths too, but I misunderstood and skipped it. So if you visit, double-check and you might be able to expand your experience.
Very pleasant place, even though it's inconveniently located. Even with just the onsen I visited, it was quite nice and worth a stop. And if the "stone bath" also has onsen, then all the more reason.
