Sampled at wellhead
Chloride

A scalding 100 C wellhead places this among Japan's hottest natural sources, a sodium chloride spring of the salty, heat-retaining family with a soda-bicarbonate undertone in its legacy name. Weakly alkaline and soft on the skin, the water emerges colorless and transparent with a slightly sweet finish and a faint hydrogen sulfide note. Conductivity of 567 mS/m and evaporation residue of 3,521 mg/kg confirm a richly mineralized brine that leaves a long-lasting warmth on the body.

About

Part of the Ooedo Onsen Monogatari (大江戸温泉物語) chain, Masuya sits in the Naruko Onsen hot spring town in Miyagi. The two large indoor baths, Tenma (天馬) and Tensho (天翔), swap between men and women each week, so you get a different bath depending on when you visit. The open-air bath looks out over the Naruko onsen valley. The water is a sulfur spring, faintly characteristic of Naruko. Day use is welcome without a reservation, and guests receive a complimentary ticket to the nearby public bath Taki-no-yu (滝の湯).

218. Oedoonsen Monogatari Masuya, Naruko Onsen Visited on higaeri for 4 stickers on the local tegate (listed from 14:00 to 18:00). In photos I later saw there was some amazing bath upstairs with views, but I ended up in the less interesting ones. Not sure if it alternates between M/F, or I just missed it, or it's not available for higaeri, or the staff didn't point it out. Photos of the baths I visited from the internet match reality. Inside, the main bath has a forest view, but through reinforced glass. Water is clear, temperature around 40. Breathing inside is comfortable. There was also a round herbal foot bath where a group of young Japanese people was sitting. Outdoor bath is small, no view, water is clear, temperature 42. If you can't get to that large outdoor bath from the hotel photos, you can skip this. If that large bath is actually accessible, the place would look interesting.
