The grand wooden bathhouse at the heart of Dogo, one of Japan's oldest hot springs. Rebuilt in 1894, the castle-like three-storey building is a designated Important Cultural Property, crowned by the Shinrokaku (振鷺閣) drum tower with its red glass and a white heron (shirasagi, 白鷺) finial that recalls the spring's founding legend. Inside are the everyday Kami-no-Yu (神の湯), the quieter Tama-no-Yu (霊の湯), and the Yushinden (又新殿), the only imperial bathing suite in Japan (viewing only). The source water flows unheated and undiluted.
