Classification

Sodium Bicarbonate-Chloride spring

A hot (83 C at the source) blended spring drawn from four Yunomine wellheads — Ojiyu, Heisei No. 1, Heisei No. 2 and Yakata-no-yu — pooled in the 'C junction tank' before delivery. Sodium-led bicarbonate water with a chloride sub-type — the classic soda-water 'jusosen' style, soft enough to sit in the Japanese 'beauty-water' family. A generous 158 mg/kg of metasilicic acid leaves a fine silica film for noticeably smoother skin, and the wellhead carries a faint rotten-egg note of hydrogen sulfide.

About

Ryokan Adumaya sits in Yunomine Onsen, one of the oldest hot spring villages in Japan, the spring here has been in continuous use since ancient times and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site alongside the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage road. The baths are built entirely from Japanese cypress (maki), giving the water a warm woody scent that mingles with the soft sulfur of the sodium-bicarbonate-chloride spring. The outdoor bath was designed by a Kyoto University garden professor and holds a quiet, lantern-lit atmosphere. A member of the Hitonoyu-wo-Mamoru-Kai (secret spring preservation society).

604. Ryokan Adumaya, Yunomine Onsen, Wakayama ★★ Visited for higaeri at 700 yen. Higaeri hours from 13:00 to 15:00. Baths rotate between male/female. The baths should also be accessible to guests of the affiliated minshuku Adumayaso. The indoor bath of this onsen is featured on the cover of a Kansai onsen magazine, and the outdoor bath was designed by a Kyoto University professor specializing in Japanese gardens. 1. Indoor area. Wooden interior with a high ceiling. Very cozy and atmospheric. Breathing inside is fine. 1.1. Main bath with clear water, light smell from the water. Temperature around 43°C. 1.2. Small bath with slightly cloudy clear water, stronger smell. Temperature around 42°C. 1.3. Steam bath. 2. Outdoor stone bath. Practically no view, but everything around the bath is very nicely designed. Clear water with fine and larger mineral deposits. Light smell from the water. Temperature around 43-44°C. Slippery bottom. A rare case where I'd rate the indoor and outdoor baths equally — and both quite highly. Highly recommended for a visit. Beyond the baths, you immediately sense the level of the place in both service and interior. For accommodation — this is probably one of the best options in Yunomine Onsen, if not the best. 13.06.2025
