A sodium chloride spring in strong-salt territory — dissolved solids of 12,620 mg/kg sit well above ocean salinity and leave a thick mineral coating on the skin. At a wellhead temperature of 75 °C it ranks among Japan's hottest natural sources, with a faint hydrogen sulfide note and a moderate salty tang at the source. Metasilicic acid at 95 mg/kg adds a thin silica film under the salt, softening the finish.

About

Shirahamakan sits right on Shirarahama Beach (白良浜), close enough to reach the sand in a couple of minutes on foot. The shared baths are kakenagashi, fed straight from a sulfur spring: an indoor bath where mineral deposits have built up into a small stone cascade, plus three separate outdoor tubs on each of the men's and women's sides, including a rock bath and a tub made from Kishu plum barrels. The water carries a faint sulfur smell and a soft, silky feel that leaves skin smooth. Of the ryokan's 41 rooms, several have their own outdoor tub or foot bath filled with the same spring water, set on a garden terrace or balcony. There's no restaurant, guests use a shared kitchen instead, and the building itself is older and a little worn, with the easygoing feel of an old-fashioned family holiday rather than a polished resort.

629. Hotel Shirahamakan, Shirahama, Wakayama ★★ Higaeri for 1000. Higaeri stated as 13:00 to 20:00. Part of the Shirahama tegata (2 stickers). They issue Toreco cards for the onsen. Staff was Japanese and very approachable. During rush hour they had trouble finding a taxi, but the young guys persisted and found one; while I waited, they lent me a charger. 1. Epic indoor bath styled like something out of the movie Alien. Clear slightly yellowish water with some fine mineral deposits on the surface. 45 degrees. 2. Outdoor area. Not as striking as the indoor bath, but also has its own atmosphere and visual appeal (apparently some renovation was underway). 2.1. Main bath. Clear slightly yellowish water. 42 degrees. 2.2. Round bath. Clear slightly yellowish water. 41 degrees. A cool distinctive onsen. If the above doesn't put you off, recommended for a visit. 17.06.2025
