下呂温泉(送湯ポンプ所)

Gero Onsen (Delivery Pump Station)
Simple
Classification

Sodium spring

An alkaline simple thermal spring in the Gero Onsen style. With a pH around 9 it sits in the Japanese beauty-water family, giving the skin a soft, slippery feel. The water is only lightly mineralized and gentle on the body, while close to 59 mg/kg of metasilicic acid leaves a thin silica film that makes skin feel noticeably smoother afterwards.

About

Yamagataya has been running since 1804, making it one of the older ryokan in Gero Onsen, part of Japan's celebrated trio of famous hot springs. The water here is clear and leaves skin noticeably smooth, and the inn draws on it across several bath styles: a spacious communal indoor bath with large windows, an outdoor rotenburo shaded by bamboo and maple where you can hear the Hida River below, and seven private open-air baths (kashikiri, 貸切) strung along the riverbank, each with a slightly different character. Some guest rooms also have their own in-room onsen baths. The private baths are available for day visitors by reservation.

56. Yamagataya, Gero Onsen Went with a tegata for higaeri (listed from 12 to 20 on weekdays, 12 to 15 on weekends). Indoor bath is hot+, water is clear. Outdoor bath temperature is hot-, clear, with a view of trees. Both baths have one stone "stump" each. Overall fairly default-feeling baths for a large hotel. Compared to other baths in Gero — skippable.
