About

Four large rotenburo (outdoor baths) line the banks of the Takaragawa River here, surrounded by forest and, in winter, deep snow. The baths are mixed-bathing (konyoku), and yuami-gi bathing wraps are provided so anyone can join comfortably. There is also a women-only rotenburo for those who prefer privacy, plus an indoor bath. The inn opened in 1923, and arriving here still feels like stepping into a different world: the wooden buildings, the sound of the river, the steam rising off the water. The walk between baths along the riverside is part of the pleasure.

Takaragawa Onsen is one of the well-known konyoku onsen. It is located not far from Minakami Onsen (Gunma), deep in the mountains. Both day use and overnight stays are available. The baths are spread along a fast-flowing mountain river, with views of the forest and mountains. It has a very atmospheric, local feel. Since the baths are large and not heated, the water away from the source is cool. It is great for summer, but in winter it can feel chilly. For day use, there is not really a proper place to wash yourself. Konyoku: all but one of the baths are mixed bathing, except for one women-only bath. Clothing is required and included in the price. Definitely recommended to visit.
