Classification

Sodium Bicarbonate-Fluoride spring

A naturally welling radon spring at Yunoyama Onsen, carrying about 137 Bq/kg of radon — enough to place it in the radon-spring tradition associated with the 'hormesis' idea. At pH 8.0 it is weakly alkaline and soft on the skin, and the water is almost colorless, tasteless and odorless. Lightly mineralized overall, it is documented for gout, chronic digestive complaints and neuralgia.

About

Sankeien (三慶園) is a traditional wooden ryokan in Yunoyama Onsen (湯の山温泉) that has been running since 1955. The building, a two-story Japanese-style structure, has kept its original feel: low corridors, warm wood, and tatami rooms. Baths include a shared indoor bath and an open-air section, with men and women alternating between them morning and evening. The standout is the private kashikiri rotenburo (貸切露天風呂), set in a Shigaraki ceramic tub with a view up toward the Gozaisho ropeway. The water is smooth and alkaline, with no sulfur smell. Next to the inn, carved into a large boulder by the Mitsutaki River, is a figure of Daikoku-sama (大黒様) that the inn's founder is said to have seen in a dream.

50. Sankeien, Yunoyama Onsen Higaeri is listed from 11:00 to 14:30. I showed up around 14:20 — the grandma let me in. The website says 800 + 200 for a small towel, but I was charged less than 1000. On the way to the ryokan you can catch a view of an abandoned building. Inside there's a fairly old-school single bath and a stone area that wasn't working. The main feature — you can open the windows and while sitting in the bath, gaze at a lone cherry tree, the forest, and the ropeway station. Breathing inside is good even before opening the window, but with the window open the air quality basically becomes outdoor-level. During my visit there was strong wind, which you could hear clearly from the bath, adding to the atmosphere. The showers don't give hot water right away — you need to wait 1-2 minutes (there's a sign about this in the changing room too). Water is clear, hot, with jet zones. There's a slight smell. For old-school bath lovers, the window feature definitely makes it worth a visit.
