Classification

Sodium Chloride spring

A sodium-chloride spring rising along the Ibusuki coast — salty, heat-retaining water with the body of a richly mineralized source (12,610 mg/kg total dissolved solids). At 79.3 °C it ranks among Japan's hottest natural sources, cooled before bathing. An unusually generous 205 mg/kg of metasilicic acid leaves a thin silica film that smooths the skin afterwards.

375. Saraku Sand Bath Hall, Ibusuki, Kagoshima Sand bath onsen for 1500 + 300 yen (towel). Operating hours listed as 08:30 to 12:00 and 13:00 to 21:00. They stamp the 88 Onsen of Kyushu book. Photos of the sand zone and bath from the internet partially match — I was there in the evening and the sand bath curtains were closed. The sand bath is on the beach — you walk a bit after the changing room. On the beach in a covered area, the staff shows you where to lie down and buries you in sand. During my visit the curtains were closed, but judging by online photos it varies. The temperature was fairly gentle. In separate areas of the beach where they don't bury people, you can see steam rising from the sand. Inside the complex there's a water bath. Breathing is comfortable, slightly cloudy clear water, temperature around 40-41. Sand baths are a rare thing — convenient location. Recommended for a visit.
