Katakurakan is a 1928 Gothic Revival bathhouse on the shore of Lake Suwa (Suwa-ko, 諏訪湖), designated a National Important Cultural Property. The centerpiece is the Sennin-buro (千人風呂), a vast marble pool deep enough to stand in, with river pebbles on the floor that give a gentle massage underfoot, large enough for a hundred bathers at once. Stained-glass windows and carved decorations line the hall; a jet bath sits alongside the main pool. Upstairs, a retro hall with views over Lake Suwa doubles as a rest area and canteen. The building was used as a filming location for Thermae Romae II.
