Owakudani Onsen Steam-Generated Blended Spring (Lines 2 & 3)

Operated by · 山田家 さくら(3F)

Mixed source

Sulfate
+ Chloride

A steam-generated blended spring fed by the volcanic vapours of Hakone's Owakudani — a hot (source 60.6 °C) acidic calcium sulfate-chloride water. At pH 2.1 it is strongly acidic, sharp enough to sting slightly on contact and long associated with stubborn skin conditions. The water is slightly milky white with a faint hydrogen sulfide note, and a generous 157 mg/kg of metasilicic acid leaves a thin silica film that makes skin feel noticeably smoother.

About

Shirayu no Yado Yamadaya (白湯の宿 山田家) sits in Hakone's Gora area and draws its water from the Owakudani volcanic source. The spring runs milky white and faintly sulfurous, and the indoor baths flow fresh without recirculation. Two large bath halls on different floors swap between men's and women's sides a couple of times daily, so staying guests can catch both layouts. On the top floor, a private open-air bath called Ubu-yu (うぶ湯) is available to reserve. The outdoor baths look out over the surrounding mountains and are decorated with Hakone yosegi-zaiku (寄木細工) marquetry woodwork. Meals are served in-room in kaiseki style. No elevator.

182. Yamadaya, Hakone Visited for day-use bathing on the 3rd floor. Day-use hours are 12:00 to 16:00. On the 4th floor there seem to be some private baths as well. Inside there's a square bath with milky water and white calcium deposits. Temperature slightly below hot. Good air inside. Outside there are two single-person baths — round and oval. I used the round one — the temperature was weird. The overall temperature was slightly below hot, but there was cooler water at the bottom, while the water stream at shoulder level was actually hot — and that was uncomfortable. The ryokan itself looks interesting inside, but bath-wise it didn't work for me: only two single-person outdoor baths with questionable temperature management — not great. Can be skipped as a day-use visit.
