Hirayama Ryokan sits in the quiet interior of Iki Island, Nagasaki, around a spring said to have been discovered by Empress Jingu (神功皇后, Jingu Kogo) in the 5th century. The water is a reddish iron-salt spring, run kakenagashi (源泉かけ流し, meaning the spring flows through without recirculation), and the bathing area includes an open-air rotenburo, indoor baths, and a mist sauna. A private family bath is also available for those who prefer to soak alone. The spring is listed in the Nihon Hitoyu o Mamoru Kai (日本秘湯を守る会, the association that protects remote hot springs) and in the Kyushu 88 hot springs circuit. One guest room has its own private outdoor bath.
