Hannyaji Onsen (般若寺温泉) started out as temple lodgings in the Meiji era and has been a private-rental bath ever since. You book the whole place for an hour, getting an indoor bath and an open-air rotenburo to yourselves. The outdoor bath sits right along the river and looks out at Ayumodoshi Falls (鮎返しの滝), one of the eight celebrated views of Okutsu. The water flows in unheated and fresh, and reviewers consistently say it leaves skin noticeably smooth. Advance reservation by phone is required.
