409. Fumoto Ryokan, Kurokawa Onsen Visited for higaeri, located not far from the temple where they sell tegata. Higaeri is usually available from 8:30 to 21:00. Included in the Kurokawa tegata. For higaeri, they only let you into one outdoor bath, which is on the other side of the river via an internal bridge. Notably, the bath available for men in this review becomes available for female overnight guests from 21:00 to 22:00. The women's rotenburo, which looks significantly different from the men's, is apparently always for women only. The ryokan has a bunch of private baths available only for overnight guests — some of them look interesting in photos. Outdoor stone bath behind a fence with peepholes for looking down, with a shallow area under a roof at the far end. Essentially no view, just neighboring buildings through the fence. Clear water, very slightly cloudy. Temperature 42. A nice rotenburo, another plus for the village's variety. It might be worth staying overnight to visit all the onsen baths in the ryokan.

For higaeri they only let you into one gender-separated rotenburo. They provide a towel. No shower. The rotenburo is located across a bridge from the main ryokan. It runs along the river, and you can see the river through special holes in the fence, which is nice. The water is fairly hot, but not extreme. There's also a section for exhibitionists - located higher up, with a lower fence, and the upper-floor windows of the hotel across are visible from practically anywhere in any position. Meanwhile, the water there is ankle-deep and cooler than in the main section. I didn't quite understand its purpose. Overall mixed feelings. I don't regret going, but if you're short on time, you can skip it.
