A simple thermal spring fed by Beppu's city-owned Unsenji wellhead together with companion municipal sources, sampled at the storage-tank outlet where they are blended before delivery. The chemistry is neutral and hypotonic with only 764 mg/kg of dissolved solids, so the water reads gentle rather than assertive — colorless, clear, with neither taste nor smell. What lifts it above plain hot water is the silica: metasilicic acid at 159 mg/kg puts it squarely in Japan's beauty-water family, leaving the thin mineral film that makes skin feel noticeably smoother afterwards.

About

An onsen wrapped in art. The spring quality is a colorless and transparent simple hot spring originally used only by locals. The women's bath walls feature paintings of Mount Yufu in pink tones, and the men's bath walls have paintings of Mount Tsurumi in blue and green tones. These are works by Beppu-based painter Yukari Ohira. You can experience time wrapped in art at this onsen. Suehiro Onsen was temporarily closed but was reopened in April 2021 by volunteers from local residents who love Suehiro Onsen. Visiting this onsen loved by locals will bring you nostalgic feelings.

122. Suehiro Onsen, Beppu A classic old-school onsen for ¥200. Hours are listed as 07:00 to 11:00 and 14:00 to 22:00 (except on the 15th of each month). They stamp the Beppu Onsen-do seal. No staff, no shower. The water is clear, temperature 44.5. There is a large mountain mural on the walls. The air inside is easy to breathe. 02.05.2024 28.12.2025
