About

Shikanoyu Hotel sits in Yunoyama Onsen at the foot of Mt. Gozaisho, with a large single-sex indoor bath and an open-air rotenburo looking onto the mountain's greenery and autumn colors, with stars and the lights of Yokkaichi visible at night. Two small reservable baths, Hinoki-no-yu (檜の湯) and Makomono-yu (まこもの湯), are booked by the hour for families or groups. The water is a clear, colorless alkaline spring. The hotel takes its name from a local legend: the spring is said to have been found some 1,300 years ago after a message from the Buddhist deity Yakushi Nyorai (薬師如来), and an injured deer once came here to heal, giving it the name Shikanoyu, the deer's bath.

435. Shikanoyu Hotel, Yunoyama Onsen We went for a day visit (listed as 11:00 to 14:30, price ¥1000). It is close to the tourist center. There are private baths for ¥3300, we did not use them. At the time of our visit, it was included in the Yunoyama January-March 2025 stamp-rally. Toreco cards are issued for the onsen, but the staff could not find them at first, then said they had run out and would not order more. There are nice wooden swings with a great view. Indoor bath. There are deer figures. The bath has wooden railings, is divided into two sections, and there is an area to lie down. The water is clear, temperature 42. It is comfortable to breathe inside. In the outdoor area there are two small baths with clear water. The first bath is for one person, temperature 39. The second is larger, temperature 40. A fairly average place in terms of onsen, but it could be an option for staying overnight. 17.01.2025
