Classification
Sodium-Calcium-Magnesium Bicarbonate spring
A simple thermal spring rising in front of Beppu Station — lightly mineralized (0.95 g/kg total dissolved solids) and gentle on the body, but quietly remarkable for its 230 mg/kg of metasilicic acid. That silica film is what makes the water feel noticeably smoother on the skin afterwards, placing this neutral-pH source squarely in the Japanese beauty-water family despite its understated classification.
A hot spring with a retro exterior. Ekimae Koto Onsen features a Taisho-era Western-style building with a green pointed roof, giving it a retro look. You can choose to bathe in one of two types of water with different spring qualities: "Atsuyu" (hot water) or "Nuruyu" (lukewarm water). The second floor serves as accommodation. Please also enjoy the hand bath in front of the building.
76. Ekimae Koutou Onsen, Beppu ★★★
A classic old-style onsen. Located near Beppu Station. There are two bath set options: Very hot and Lukewarm water. Each costs 250 yen. Operating hours are stated as 06:00 to 00:00, but if there are no overnight guests, it is from 08:00 to 23:00. They stamp the Beppu Onsen-do card – it doesn't matter which bath set is chosen, the facility uses one type of stamp. There is staff, but no shower.
1. Very hot bath zone. Located to the left of the reception. Inside the zone, there is a powerful atmosphere – high ceiling, everything is very old, some equipment hums quite loudly, the lockers open with a sound like the drawers in the early Fallout game series. In general, if Fallout had a Japanese onsen, it would look exactly like this. The air inside the bath area is comfortable to breathe.
1.1. Main bath. Water is clear, temperature about 45°C.
1.2. Bath under the changing room. Water is clear. In 2024 it was even hotter than the main bath, but in 2025-2026 it was cooler – about 35.5°C.
2. Lukewarm water bath zone. Located to the right of the reception. Semi-circular bath. Water is clear, temperature about 38.5°C. The air inside is comfortable to breathe.
A strong, rugged atmosphere, several bath variations, excellent operating hours and location, included in Onsen-do – a top representative of classic old-style onsens.
