About

Izumiya is a small ryokan in Matsunoyama, one of the three springs long grouped as Japan's great medicinal waters alongside Kusatsu and Arima. All five of the inn's baths are kashikiri (貸切, private), free and open without reservation: three open-air and two indoor. Among them, the Motoyu (元湯), an open-air bath, runs on flowing water and delivers the spring at its most direct. The water at Matsunoyama is notably salty and warming, with a faint oily scent, and settles smoothly on the skin. The inn is an old wooden ryokan, small and quiet.
