An alkaline simple sulfur spring. At the wellhead the water carries a faint yellowish tint, a soft rotten-egg whiff of hydrogen sulfide, and a barely sweet note on the tongue. At pH 9.4 it sits firmly in the Japanese beauty-water family, with the slippery feel that strong alkalinity gives on the skin. Mineralization is light at 0.413 g/kg, so the body of the water stays gentle rather than heavy.

395. Izuminoyu, Kurume, Fukuoka This place offers only various private onsen baths for 2,400-4,000. Operating hours stated as 10:00 to 03:00. They stamp the 88 Onsen of Kyushu book. On Saturday evening, walking in without a reservation, the earliest slot I could get was 2.5 hours out (the 4,000 yen one — the others were booked even further out). The staff was young with limited English, joking around with each other — while the service quality suffered a bit, it was fun. The changing room is spacious enough, with couches and air conditioning. Indoor bath with clear water and a slight proper sulfurous smell, temperature 44.5. Breathing inside is comfortable. Outdoor bath with clear water and a slight proper sulfurous smell, temperature 43. A solid place for private baths. There's a shopping center nearby with locals, so the wait was easy to fill productively, and the overall aftertaste of the visit was pleasant.
