An alkaline simple sulfur spring. At the wellhead the water carries a faint yellowish tint, a soft rotten-egg whiff of hydrogen sulfide, and a barely sweet note on the tongue. At pH 9.4 it sits firmly in the Japanese beauty-water family, with the slippery feel that strong alkalinity gives on the skin. Mineralization is light at 0.413 g/kg, so the body of the water stays gentle rather than heavy.

395. Izuminoyu, Kurume, Fukuoka ★ The facility offers only various private onsen, priced at ¥2400-4000. The stated hours are 10:00 to 03:00. They stamp the Kyushu 88 Onsen stamp rally. On Saturday evening, walking in from the street, I could only get a reservation for 2.5 hours later, for the ¥4000 one, with the others even farther out. The staff were young and had limited English, and they teased each other, so the service felt a bit worse because of that, but it was fun. The changing room is fairly comfortable for the space, with small sofas and air conditioning. The indoor bath has clear water with a slight, proper sulfurous smell, and the temperature is 44.5. It is comfortable to breathe inside. The outdoor bath has clear water with a slight, proper sulfurous smell, and the temperature is 43. For private baths, it is a solid place. There is a shopping center nearby with local people, so I was able to make good use of the waiting time, and overall the aftertaste of the visit was pleasant. 11.01.2025
