A gentle simple thermal spring, blended from Rendaiji well No. 2 and two neighbouring wells. Weakly alkaline at pH 7.9 and lightly mineralised, it is soft on the skin rather than assertive. The posted utilisation certificate records no dilution, no heating, no recirculation and no disinfection — a full free-flow bath fed directly from a source some 50 m away. A wall chart in the bathhouse sets out Kurhaus-style bathing programmes: a rinse, full-body and partial soaks, a cascade bath, bubble bath, steam box and lying bath, sequenced for goals such as general health, fatigue recovery, and easing lower-back and shoulder stiffness.

Said to be the oldest ryokan in Shimoda, Kurhaus Ishibashi sits in Rendaiji Onsen (蓮台寺温泉), a quiet hot-spring district a short ride from town. The bathing area draws on a Kurhaus-style therapeutic concept, offering several bath types in one: a cascade bath (utaseyu, 打たせ湯), a steam box (hakamushi, 箱蒸し), a bubble bath, a reclining bath, and a garden rotenburo. The spring water flows in fresh without recirculation, drawn from a blend of three local sources. In-room hot spring baths are also available. The building itself is a well-worn time capsule, long corridors, a pond-facing courtyard, and an atmosphere that has barely changed since the inn's heyday decades ago.

210. Kurhaus Ishibashi Ryokan, Shimoda Visited for higaeri, listed from 10:00 to 21:00. They first quoted 1430, but after the stamp book it became 1100. They stamp the Shizuoka 60 Onsens rally book. The ryokan looks like it was glued together from different buildings - an authentic entrance, a technical corridor with a low ceiling, then a traditional section again, then the onsen in a strange design. 1. Indoor area. The interior design is rather shabby for a ryokan. Breathing inside is good. 1.1. Bubble bath, water is clear, temperature is hot. 1.2. Utaseyu on wooden stumps with very hot water. 1.3. Two steam boxes. 1.4. A bath with slightly cool water. 2. Outdoor stone bath, water is clear, temperature is warm. The view from the bath is of a crummy old technical fence. If you don't need the stamp for an achievement, this is definitely a skip - a mediocre place, especially for higaeri.
